King David is usually portrayed as a passionate worshiper, a man who praised God fervently through any storm in his life, from the time the previous king was trying to murder him to when his own son Absalom betrayed him to divide his kingdom. The image is that David stood strong in the Lord through all this, dutifully praising Him without ever doubting His promises. God had in fact promised David’s dynasty would rule over Israel forever.
David wrote so many of his songs and poems down, which were later collected within the book of Psalms. This furthers our image of a man constantly praising and glorifying God. There’s even a story recorded in 2 Samuel where King David is dancing with joy, among the commoners of all people, as the ark of the covenant is being brought into Jersualem. When his own wife chastised him for his display, calling him a “vulgar fool” who exposed himself in front of the slave girls, David replied:
“I am willing to shame and humiliate myself even more than this! But with the slave girls whom you mentioned let me be distinguished!”

Now this is a man of God, a man of confidence and faith who doesn’t let anything get him down! Yet despite this image we have of David as a continuous worshiper, he was also the one who wrote this:
“How long, LORD, will you continue to ignore me?
How long will you pay no attention to me?
How long must I worry, and suffer in broad daylight?
How long will my enemy gloat over me? Look at me!
Answer me, O LORD my God!
Revive me, or else I will die!”

This is how I feel sometimes when the lyrics don’t match up.
“I’m gonna see a victory…”
“No one nor nothing can separate me from your love…”
“You will be my strength…”
This is no doubt how you feel sometimes. So distant from God, ignored by Him, while we’re attacked by demonic forces in the midst of singing our songs.
